Let's Save Energy
Alliance to Save Energy's Blog

A Q&A with Phil Croskey, Co-Founder & CEO of MD Energy Advisors. He serves as Treasurer of the Alliance’s Board of Directors and has been a member since June 2022.
What inspired you to enter the energy efficiency industry?
The energy sector is a critical pillar of the U.S. economy and remains resilient even during economic downturns. Energy efficiency— with its proven, documented benefits —is an area in which meaningful change can take place. While approaches to achieving efficiency may vary, the overall positive impact on cost savings, sustainability, and reliability is undeniable.
Can you share your journey from the early stages of your career to where you are now?
My path into the energy sector was unconventional. After graduating from college, I began my career in banking, holding leadership roles in marketing, finance, and risk mitigation. Transitioning from banking, I took on the role of Director of Economic Development for the City of Baltimore, overseeing $3 billion in projects. During that time, two colleagues and I recognized an opportunity in the energy sector, leading us to co-found MD Energy Advisors in 2010. That decision set the stage for my journey in the energy efficiency sector, in which I continue to drive impact and innovation.
What challenges did you face as an entrepreneur and how did you overcome them?
Coming from a background outside the energy sector, one of my biggest challenges was building industry knowledge and a strong network. The first ten years served as my apprenticeship—an intensive learning period in which I immersed myself in the industry, asked the right questions, and sought out mentors. Through perseverance, strategic relationships, and a commitment to continuous learning, I was able to navigate the complexities of the sector and establish a strong foundation for long-term success.
How does your company contribute to advancing energy efficiency solutions?
MD Energy Advisors serves two core customer segments: utilities and private-sector commercial clients. For utilities across the United States, we design and implement energy efficiency and demand-side management programs that drive measurable impact. On the private-sector side, we help businesses identify and implement tailored energy efficiency solutions, which reduces costs and improves sustainability. Through these efforts, we bridge the gap between policy-driven efficiency initiatives and real-world implementation, making energy efficiency more accessible and effective.
How do you see the energy efficiency industry evolving in the next five to ten years?
Energy efficiency will become increasingly central to the public consciousness as energy demand continues to rise, driving up costs. At the same time, the growing impact of climate change—including more frequent and severe natural disasters—will put added pressure on communities and local economies. In response, making buildings and homes more energy-efficient will emerge as one of the most effective strategies for reducing costs, enhancing energy security, and mitigating climate change.
What leadership principles have guided you in growing your business?
I believe in the principle that “business moves at the speed of relationships." Strong partnerships are the foundation of success. Whether with clients, employees, or industry peers, prioritizing trust, collaboration, and mutual growth has been essential to scaling our company. By fostering meaningful connections and maintaining a people-first approach, we’ve been able to drive sustainable growth, create long-term value, and navigate challenges more effectively.
What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to enter the energy sector?
It’s essential to be a continuous learner. The energy sector is evolving rapidly, with new technologies, policies, and market trends emerging every day. Entrepreneurs who stay informed, adapt to change, and embrace innovation will be best positioned for success. Building strong industry relationships and seeking mentorship can also provide valuable insights and open doors to opportunities. Most importantly, it’s critical to focus on creating real value—solutions that drive long-term impact.
Can you share a significant lesson you've learned from a business setback or challenge?
I’ve learned that "rainbows only follow storms." Challenges can feel overwhelming in the moment, but there is always clear weather on the other side. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of resilience and adaptability. Every setback presents an opportunity to learn, grow, and refine your approach. The key is to stay focused, embrace change, and keep moving forward with confidence, knowing that challenges often lead to greater opportunities.
How do you see your work impacting communities and the broader energy landscape?
Our work directly contributes to creating more energy-efficient communities—reducing costs for businesses and residents while promoting sustainability. By implementing energy efficiency and demand-side management programs, we help utilities optimize energy use, which leads to lower strain on the grid and greater energy security. For private-sector clients, we identify and implement solutions that drive economic savings and environmental benefits. Ultimately, our efforts help build a more resilient energy infrastructure, reduce carbon footprints, and make clean, affordable energy more accessible. This positively shapes both local communities and the broader energy landscape.
What legacy do you hope to leave in the energy efficiency space?
I hope to leave a legacy of impact and accessibility in the energy efficiency space. My goal is to help make energy efficiency a standard practice rather than an afterthought—ensuring that businesses, communities, and individuals recognize its value in driving economic savings, energy security, and sustainability. I want to inspire future entrepreneurs to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. Then I will have made a meaningful difference.
