Snohomish County Public Utility District
Snohomish County PUD began operating as an electric utility on September 1, 1949, providing public power to Snohomish County and Camano Island. (It started as a water utility on January 17, 1946 and continues to provide water service to the northeast section of the county.) The utility is at the forefront of tidal and geothermal energy research in the Pacific Northwest, both of which are clean, reliable and plentiful in the region. Other energy comes from renewable hydroelectric sources, co-generation projects fueled by biogas and biomass, and wind energy projects.
Snohomish County PUD has acted as a regional leader in conservation for more than 25 years. In that time it has weatherized more than 60,000 homes, recycled about 20,000 older, energy-wasting refrigerators and freezers, and sold more than 3 million compact fluorescent lights at discounted prices through a retail network.
Snohomish County PUD is a municipal corporation of the state of Washington, formed by a majority vote of the people for the purpose of providing electric and/or water utility service. It is the largest of 28 PUDs in the state of Washington and Bonneville Power Administration’s largest customer. Snohomish County PUD serves approximately 318,000 customers and is the twelfth largest publicly owned utility in the nation in terms of customers served. The PUD’s service area consists of 2,200 square miles, including all of Snohomish County and Camano Island. The utility maintains nearly 6,000 miles of distribution line.
