H.R. 2245 – Including Smart Grid Capability on Energy Guide Labels for Products
H.R. 2245 was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-N.C.) on May 8, 2015. Most recently, these provisions were included in Section 3121 of H.R. 8, the House’s comprehensive energy bill. An identical bill was introduced in the U.S. Senate (S. 3062) by Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) on June 15, 2016. Its provisions were likewise included in Section 3121 of S. 2012, the Senate’s comprehensive energy bill.
Summary
This bill would amend the Energy Policy and Conservation Act to require the Federal Trade Commission to make a special note about smart grid capability on Energy Guide labels. The Commission would include the following information:
- the product’s smart grid capability (or lack thereof);
- how the use and value of the smart grid capability depends on the utility system that the product draws from and how the customer uses the feature; and
- the estimated savings on the product’s annual operation cost
The estimated savings would represent the result of incremental energy and electricity cost savings when the customer takes full advantage of the product’s smart grid capability.
