Alliance Applauds Biden-Harris Announcement on Performance Contracting and the Climate Smart Buildings Initiative
WASHINGTON – The Alliance to Save Energy released the following statement from President Paula Glover after today’s announcement by the Biden-Harris Administration to increase energy efficiency retrofits of federal buildings through performance contracting and the Climate Smart Buildings Initiative.
“The Alliance to Save Energy applauds the Biden-Harris Administration for taking the lead in making our federal buildings more energy efficient through the Climate Smart Buildings Initiative. The Initiative will focus on the use of energy performance contracts as the major vehicle by which to achieve emission reductions and energy cost savings in the Federal built environment— resulting in significant savings for taxpayers,” Glover said. “If we are to reduce emissions from Federal buildings by 50% by 2032, then energy efficiency will need to play a significant role— and the use of performance contracting is key to maximize energy efficiency investments.”
“Energy performance contracts are at a historic low, which has resulted in lost opportunities to lower emissions and increase the nation’s energy and economic security. The Climate Smart Buildings Initiative is projected to increase performance contract investments by five-fold to $1.2 billion per year by 2030, equaling over $8 billion of private sector investments, and creating and supporting some 80,000 new jobs. Importantly, the Initiative is expected to reduce GHG emissions up to 2.8 million metric tons.”
We look forward to our continued work with the Administration in launching the new Initiative and increasing the nation’s investments in energy efficiency.”
