Alliance Statement on Honorary Vice-Chair Sen. Portman Not Seeking Reelection
The Alliance to Save Energy released the following statement from President Paula Glover on Sen. Rob Portman’s announcement this Monday that he will not seek reelection in 2022. Sen. Portman serves as the vice chair of the Alliance’s honorary board:
“This is a big loss for energy efficiency. Sen. Portman has really understood both the economic and environmental benefits of energy efficiency since he first came to Congress, and as a member of our Honorary Board, he has been a consistent partner and champion for our cause. So there will be big shoes to fill. But we also look forward to working with him even more urgently in the next two years to move efficiency forward.”
Sen. Portman joined the Honorary Board of the Alliance in 2012. Over his past decade in Congress, he has become well-known for his bipartisan policy efforts, and consistently stood up as a strong proponent of energy efficiency legislation. Together with Alliance Honorary Chair Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D – N.H.), he introduced the Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act (ESIC) most recently in the 116th Congress. The bill included high-impact policies to improve efficiency in buildings, industry, and the federal government. Many provisions from the bill were enacted into law in recent years, including in the Energy Act of 2020, which was signed into law in December.
