Alliance Welcomes Efficiency Incentives in Energy Tax Bill

Release Date: Tuesday, November 19, 2019

WASHINGTON—The Alliance to Save Energy released the following statement from President Jason Hartke on the Growing Renewable Energy and Efficiency Now (GREEN) Act announced Tuesday by House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal (D-Mass.) and Select Revenue Measures Subcommittee Chairman Mike Thompson (D-Calif.):

“We commend the committee for putting together this comprehensive proposal and recognizing the critical importance of energy efficiency. This package is great for efficiency and would significantly accelerate gains across sectors, including giving homeowners incentives for making efficiency improvements, rewarding homebuilders for building high-efficiency homes, and opening up new opportunities for consumers to buy electric vehicles. We know we need to move a lot faster on energy efficiency, the single most impactful and cost-effective solution we have for mitigating climate change. Passing these efficiency provisions would go a long way toward reducing the U.S. carbon footprint while also creating jobs and lowering consumer energy bills.”

The Ways and Means tax package includes a number of bipartisan Alliance priorities, including modernizing and extending tax incentives for energy efficiency improvements to new and existing homes, expanding incentives for electric vehicles and encouraging water efficiency improvements.

Recent studies have found that accelerating energy efficiency gains is critical for slowing climate change. The International Energy Agency has found that energy efficiency alone can account for nearly half of the greenhouse gas emissions reductions needed for meeting climate goals. Meanwhile, energy efficiency is the largest sector in the clean energy economy, supporting more than 2.3 million U.S. jobs, mostly in construction and manufacturing.
