Alliance to Save Energy Statement on Election Results

Release Date: Saturday, November 7, 2020

WASHINGTON – The Alliance to Save Energy released the following statement from Interim President Clay Nesler on Tuesday’s elections:

“We want to congratulate all the winners of Tuesday’s elections, particularly President-elect Biden, Vice President-elect Harris, and the members of our Honorary Board of Advisors who will be returning to Washington in the next Congress.”

“There is a lot to like in the Biden campaign’s energy platform. He and his team clearly understand the power of energy efficiency to create good-paying American jobs while ensuring that the clean energy transition is affordable and accessible for everyone. They have put forward strong plans for improving energy efficiency across the economy, and we’re ready to help get it done. The trick now will be to get those plans through Congress. The Alliance has a long history of working with both sides of the aisle, so we’re optimistic that we can.”

“We know that more than 335,000 energy efficiency workers are out of a job as a direct result of the pandemic. The Biden campaign’s proposals would put them back to work, and the magic of efficiency is that they do that while saving Americans money on energy bills and delivering enormous reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Energy efficiency is in fact the best solution we have for addressing climate change, and there is potential to do so much more.”

“We think it’s realistic that we can get a lot of this done. We can have stronger tax incentives that encourage homeowners and building owners to make efficiency improvements. We can have significant new investments for retrofitting schools, hospitals, and small businesses. We can increase funding for weatherization assistance for low-income homeowners and more efficient affordable housing. And we can pass a forward-looking infrastructure bill that modernizes our outdated transportation system with electric vehicle infrastructure, improved mass transit, and better ports and airports.”

All 12 members of the Alliance’s Honorary Board on the ballot were reelected Tuesday: Honorary Chair Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Honorary Vice Chair Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.), Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), Rep. Michael Burgess (R-Texas), Rep. Mike Kelly (R-Pa.), Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), Rep. David McKinley (R-W.Va.), Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.), Rep. Paul Tonko (D-N.Y.), and Rep. Peter Welch (D-Vt.). One member, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), is retiring.

“Sen. Alexander has been a tremendous ally of the Alliance and a champion for energy efficiency in the U.S. Senate. He has particularly led the charge in recent years to secure stronger funding for federal programs that drive efficiency throughout the economy, and he has also led proposals to boost manufacturing efficiency, to strengthen research and development, and to expand tax incentives for electric vehicles. We greatly appreciate his support for our mission and wish him the best.”
