WASHINGTON – The Alliance to Save Energy’s Board of Directors elected seven new members Thursday, bringing on executives from leading technology companies, utilities, and service providers that reflect energy efficiency’s evolving role as a dynamic, integrated solution in the rapidly changing power sector.

The organization will be welcoming new board members Alicia Barton, President and CEO of NYSERDA; Michael Bushey, Director, Customer Programs and Services, at Southern California Edison; Jeff Hamel, Director of Global Energy and Enterprise Partnerships at Google; Katie McGinty, Vice President, Global Government Relations, at Johnson Controls; Adam Procell, President and CEO of Lime Energy; Anders Sjoelin, Head of the Power Grids North America business at ABB; and Debra Smith, General Manager and CEO of Seattle City Light.

“As energy efficiency keeps evolving, we’re excited to bring in these technology and service provider experts who are instrumental in creating new ways to reach higher levels of efficiency,” said Alliance to Save Energy President Jason Hartke. “Energy efficiency is increasingly integrated, responsive, and deployable, and these leaders are going to be key for helping us navigate these opportunities.”

Alicia Barton heads NYSERDA, a public benefit corporation that advances innovative energy solutions to improve New York State’s economy and environment. She was previously co-chair of the Energy and Cleantech Practice at Foley Hoag, LLP, and earlier served as CEO of the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center.

Michael Bushey directs Demand Side Management Programs at Southern California Edison; he and his team are responsible for managing and delivering SCE's Energy Efficiency, Demand Response, and Income Qualified Program Portfolio to SCE’s five million customers. He has more than 25 years of experience in the regulated and unregulated energy industry.

“At Edison, we’re pleased to continue our active support and partnership with the Alliance to Save Energy,” Bushey said. “I’m looking forward to serving on the board and continuing our commitment to industry partners focused on safe, affordable, and clean energy resources.”

Jeff Hamel develops and executes strategic partnerships at Google with energy providers, professional installers, and enterprise service providers that leverage the company’s hardware and services. He was previously Executive Director for EPRI’s Power Delivery and Utilization team and was earlier responsible for managing and leading new growth in GE’s power business.

“Technology and innovation are reshaping the energy efficiency space,” said Jeff Hamel. “There are tremendous opportunities not just to use energy smarter and reduce emissions but to create new markets and economic activity. That’s why I’m excited to join the Alliance to Save Energy’s board and work across sectors with all of the terrific companies and organizations under the Alliance’s umbrella to advance this critical mission.”

Katie McGinty is responsible for Johnson Controls’ government relations and regulatory activities worldwide that support energy-efficient solutions, intelligent buildings, and integrated infrastructures to deliver smart cities and communities. Her public sector experience includes serving as Chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality and Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

“I am looking forward to joining the Alliance to Save Energy board and supporting their efforts to double down on energy efficiency,” said Katie McGinty. “Energy efficiency is the most abundant and economical of available climate solutions and new approaches leveraging active efficiency promise even greater impacts in the future.”

Adam Procell has led Lime Energy, a Willdan Company, through rapid expansion to become the leader in the design and implementation of utility energy efficiency programs that serve small and mid-sized business customers. He has worked with public officials to develop regulations and legislation in the areas of energy efficiency, renewable energy, and sustainability.

“By deploying energy efficiency across the entire U.S. economy we have the unique opportunity to simultaneously drive economic growth, environmental improvements, and positive social change,” said Adam Procell. “The Alliance to Save Energy plays an important role in this work, from building consensus to informing policy to driving action by industry and government. I have had the pleasure of interacting with the Alliance throughout my career, and I am excited for the opportunity to work with Alliance staff and my fellow Board members to advance this critical work.”

Anders Sjoelin leads the Power Grids North Americas business division at ABB. With nine manufacturing sites and almost 5,000 employees across the U.S., ABB Power Grids has provided the foundational electrical infrastructure and pioneering technologies that transmit electricity efficiently and reliably from source to socket to electric utilities, transportation, and industrial companies for over 100 years.

“As a new member of the board, I am very proud and excited to represent ABB Power Grids and be able to contribute to a variety of sustainability efforts to provide clean and reliable power to US communities,” said Anders Sjoelin. “Being a board member of the Alliance to Save Energy will not only allow us to get additional opportunities to learn how to make our solutions even more sustainable, but also share our vast global expertise in shaping stronger, smarter, and more sustainable electrical grids.”

Debra Smith leads Seattle City Light, one of the nation’s largest publicly owned utilities, serving more than 500,000 customers. She is an Executive Committee member for both Northwest Requirements Utilities and the Public Power Council. Smith previously served as General Manager of Central Lincoln PUD in Oregon.

“I appreciate the opportunity to serve on the Alliance Board and further our common goal of increasing the productivity of the energy resources we already have,” said Debra Smith. “Seattle City Light has been promoting energy efficiency for more than 40 years to support reliability, affordability, and environmental responsibility. Working together we can make an even bigger positive impact.”

Two of the new Board members will succeed departing members from their companies: Michael Bushey succeeds Jill Anderson of Southern California Edison, and Katie McGinty succeeds Clay Nesler of Johnson Controls.
