50x50 Commission Announces 13 Supporting Organizations Joining Campaign to Cut Energy Use in Transportation

Release Date: Monday, November 26, 2018

WASHINGTON – Thirteen national and regional organizations are teaming up with the Alliance to Save Energy’s 50x50 Commission as Supporting Organizations, helping support the Commission’s outreach to key stakeholders and identify strategies to reduce energy use in U.S. transportation.

The Alliance to Save Energy’s 50x50 Commission on U.S. Transportation Sector Efficiency (“50x50 Commission”) is a diverse coalition of leading vehicle manufacturers, utilities, environmental and consumer groups, unions, technology companies, and public officials, including Pittsburgh Mayor William Peduto (D) and Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price (R). The Commission issued a consensus report in September calling on policymakers to embrace a series of recommendations aiming to reduce energy use in transportation 50 percent by 2050 – while embracing new technologies to meet future mobility needs.

The Supporting Organizations announced today are: Alliance for Transportation Electrification, American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, Business Council for Sustainable Energy, Center for Sustainable Energy, National Association of State Energy Officials, National Governors Association, National League of Cities, Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships, Plug In America, Smart Electric Power Alliance, Southeast Energy Efficiency Alliance, Southwest Energy Efficiency Project, and VEIC.

“The Commission brings together leaders from across the nation who have the solutions for reimagining our transportation network so it uses significantly less energy,” said Alliance to Save Energy President Jason Hartke. “Now we’re building even wider support from groups around the country who will be playing important supporting roles in our outreach to federal, state, and local policymakers as we make the case for our recommendations. These groups will not only raise awareness for the Commission but help engage policymakers across the country.”

Sue Gander, Director of the Environment, Energy and Transportation Division of the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices, said: “Governors are leading the way in addressing their states’ mobility needs in a sustainable manner. This isn’t a partisan issue, but a matter of economic development, environmental stewardship, and forward thinking to improve the quality of life in all of our states.”

Lawrence Goldenhersh, President of the Center for Sustainable Energy, said: “From the frontline of efforts to adopt cleaner, more sustainable and equitable transportation, we see tremendous value in collaborating on the 50x50 transportation initiative to reach our mutual goals. Reducing fossil fuel use in transportation, and the associated harmful emissions, is among the most critical tasks we face to forestall greater global climate change, improve human health and preserve the environment.”

Julia Hamm, President and CEO of the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA), said: "Reaching the 50x50 goal will require broad stakeholder engagement and collaboration, which have long been the foundations of SEPA's work to advance the U.S. transition to clean energy and a modern grid. The electrification and decarbonization of transport present enormous challenges, but also enormous opportunity for all parties, including utilities and clean technology and smart grid developers. With strong, cross-industry support, the 50x50 Commission will be a real engine for innovation across the transportation and energy sectors."

Jim Madej, CEO of VEIC, said: “We are joining with the 50x50 Commission because we know that reducing harmful emissions from the transportation sector is crucial to fighting the global climate crisis. Our work to advance the use of light- and heavy-duty electric vehicles through advocacy and market transformation aligns with the Commission’s goals. We are excited to contribute to this important effort with our partners.”

The Business Council for Sustainable Energy said: “Transportation is a critical area for energy savings and greenhouse gas reduction opportunities. Industry, working in partnership with government officials and stakeholders, have the opportunity to accelerate deployment of a broad range of sustainable transportation options. The 50x50 initiative offers a platform for this to occur.”

The National League of Cities said: “The National League of Cities is proud to partner on the 50x50 initiative, because we believe that collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to sustainable transit are key to creating resilient communities and an inclusive future for all. We’re excited to work with city leaders and our partners to drive this vision forward.”

Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships said: “NEEP is excited to collaborate with the Alliance to Save Energy and other supporting organizations through the 50x50 initiative to help states and communities in the Northeast achieve their carbon reduction goals by promoting low-carbon transportation solutions. This initiative is an exemplary display of regional collaboration – a fundamental element of NEEP’s mission.”

Plug In America said: "As the voice of the electric vehicle driver, Plug In America is excited to join this effort to reduce energy used in transportation 50% by 2050. Plug-in electric vehicles are a big part of this solution – they're efficient, clean, and consumers love to drive them.”
