The Alliance to Save Energy proudly kicked off the 9th annual EE Global Forum by recognizing three significant contributors to the cause of advancing energy efficiency at the EE Visionary Awards Luncheon. This year, the Alliance’s EE Visionary Awards honored energy-efficient campuses around the world.

Kateri Callahan, Alliance to Save Energy president, opened her remarks in front of a packed audience at the EE Visionary Awards Luncheon by recognizing the vital role of campuses of all kinds across the world in driving energy efficiency policy and helping shape the conversation. During the luncheon, Callahan presented EE Visionary Awards to three diverse campuses across the world that are paving the way for disruptive innovation in buildings-efficiency design.

Chang Gung Memorial Hospital

In attendance at EE Global to accept the award for the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital was Peter Halliday, Senior Vice President at Siemens Building Technology. Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taoyuan City, Taiwan recently created a new cancer treatment center boasting LEED-HC Platinum certification, making it the first hospital in Asia to obtain these credentials. The cancer treatment building, 42 percent more energy-efficient than standard buildings, was constructed in partnership with Siemens Taiwan.  

Stanford University

Joseph Stagner, Executive Director of Sustainability & Energy Management at Stanford University was present to accept the award on behalf of Stanford University for its Stanford Energy Systems Innovation (SESI). SESI is a multi-year, multi-phase project that is transforming the energy systems across the university. As part of SESI, Stanford constructed a brand new, state-of-the-art Central Energy Facility in 2015, effectively transforming the university energy supply from 100 percent fossil-fuel based combined heat and power system to a grid-sourced electricity system with more efficient electric heat recovery.

UN City

At the reception to accept the award for UN City was John Christensen, Director at UNEP DTU Partnership. UN City, a UN campus located in Copenhagen, is a LEED-certified campus that houses nine UN agencies and has earned the highest energy-efficient rating according to Danish building code. It has also been awarded the European Commission’s Green Building Award for New Buildings after cutting its predicted energy consumption by 55 percent.

The Alliance looks forward to recognizing continued innovation in the buildings-efficiency space and is encouraged that these three companies will continue to serve as inspiration around the world.
